No Limit – first street art festival in the world to receive an environmental diploma?

July 14, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

On June 27, Miljöstrategen announced, after external review, that No Limit Street Art 2017 fulfills the requirements for environmental graduated events according to the criteria for Swedish Environmental Base. It means, most likely, that No Limit is the world’s first street art festival that receives an environmental diploma.

“Of course, we can not say 100% that it’s totally unique, but neither we, Miljöstrategen or the municipality environmental investigators have found any other examples. The diploma is in line with both the festival, the municipality and Borås TME’s thoughts of minimizing environmental impact in connection with major events in the city, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager No Limit Street Art Borås.

In the audit prior to the diploma, at least 75% of specified practical measures are required. No Limit managed 95% of the points of action and has therefore passed the diploma.

– As with other environmental graduated events, an audit will also take place during the festival itself. Then, No Limit is reviewed through an additional review to see that we keep what we promised and ensure environmental work all the way, “continues Stina Hallhagen.

Environmental diploma of event
Swedish Environmental Base has a method of environmental graduation of events based on a number of compulsory elements and that the event meets at least 75% of a practical list of actions.

Mural master pieces by Fintan Magee to No Limit

June 7, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Fintan Magee is a muralist based in Sydney Australia. Born in 1985 in Lismore NSW to an architect mother and father who was a sculptor, he started drawing at a young age and became involved in the Australian graffiti scene at the 13. Moving away from traditional graffiti in 2010 his large-scale paintings often inhabit the isolated, abandoned and broken corners of the city. Drawing from personal experience and the mundane his figurative paintings are deeply integrated with the urban environment and explore themes of waste, consumption, loss, transition, and the environment and his works contain a sentimentality and softness influenced by children’s books and the Low Brow art movement.

He has solidified his position as one of Australia’s leading public artists and has traveled extensively, completing projects in London, Vienna, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, Moscow, Rome and Dublin amongst others.

– I´m so happy to have Fintan in our line up for No Limit. His large murals are true master pieces and the way he sometimes does incorporate the surroundings in the painting makin it hard to distinguish where the wall start or ends, is nothing but amazing. I think Fintans piece in Borås will be a true favourite for many of our visitors, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– I´m really happy for the variety of our artists and the art styles they represent. Fintan, who has done everything from large scale murals to canvases and installations, is a really strong add to our line up and I look forward to see his piece on some huge wall in Borås, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Abstract, expressionistic art of JM Rizzi to No Limit

May 23, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

James M. Rizzi known better as JM Rizzi is a Dallas-based artist whose artwork is influenced by Abstract Expressionism, executed with a Neo-Contemporary twist. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1975, JM Rizzi discovered his love for art at an early age. Shaped by the raw energy of the city and following in the footsteps of the pioneers of street art, Rizzi pursued a degree in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts, graduating in 1997. In the years that followed, he took to the streets, adding his colorful interpretations to the urban landscape.

Establishing a strong name in both street art and fine art, JM Rizzi’s imagery has become iconic in his native New York City as well as Dallas, where he currently resides. With major commissioned projects around the globe, his work can be found in NYC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. With a determined statement on motion, scale and color, JM Rizzi composes a magical symphony of shapes and forms, all pulsating into one another. His paintings are both serious and sensual while never sacrificing the energy and fearless that he’s become known for. These are the works of a mature painter in his prime.

– I just love the amazing colors of JMR, it has got a very unique kind of enamel luster with sharp abstract lines and smooth shadings. A perfect combination of graffiti and expressionist painting, it´s like the best of both worlds, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– The colors of JMR will really stand out in the streets of Borås. The pieces are really exciting and joyfull and I´m happy to bring more balance between imaginative and abstract art in No Limit, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Lakwena contributes with colorful messages to No Limit

May 16, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Lakwena Maciver is a London-based artist exhibiting work internationally, both in galleries and in the public environment. Her work is inspired by adornment, and its use and power as a means of communication. Informed by decoration both aesthetically and conceptually, she explores the messages that decoration is used to communicate, its traditional use in worship and myth-making and how this translates into contemporary popular culture.

Concerned with the significance of how and who we decorate, and what this reflects about our values and beliefs, Lakwena positions kaleidoscopic colours, bold pattern and adornment as powerful signifiers to redefine and reassign value and glory. Using words as both images and as anchors of meaning, she borrows from the techniques and conventions of traditional sign-writing and contemporary graphic design.

– I first saw her work when I was painting for Art Basel in Miami in 2013. I watched her do a big mural there and fell in love with her work. After briefly meeting her, and talking to her about her work ethics, she was an obvious choice for us, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– I´m so happy to have Lakwena in our line up. This year we really managed to get a wide range of styles. The work she makes is so colorful and despite it´s really cheerful it also has a deeper meaning in the messages. I love how she combines these important messages with the vibrant colors and massive typography and graphic forms, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Typography becomes art in the hands of Gemma O´Brien

May 9, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Gemma O’Brien is an Australian artist specialising in lettering, illustration and typography. After completing a Bachelor of Design at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney, Gemma worked as an art director at Animal Logic and Fuel VFX before deciding to fly solo as a commercial illustrator in 2012.

Her typographic work takes on a variety of forms, from calligraphic brushwork, illustration and digital type, to large scale hand-painted murals. She splits her time between advertising commissions, gallery shows, speaking engagements, and hosting hand-lettering workshops around the world.

– Typography itself really is an artform. Gemma takes it one step further with her large scale murals that appeals strongly to me as a big typography geek. Her art is a refined hybrid of typography, advertising and traditional sign painting. With my past in the ad agency business I really appreciate the beauty and the craftsmanship in Gemmas work, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– Gemma ads a totally new genre to No Limit and yet another country of origin. As Borås has a long tradition in the ad agency business from the times when the mail order flourished to modern digital e-business, I think Gemmas art suits the city really well. We probably have a lot of typography aficionados and I think her beautiful lettering will be loved by many, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Photorealistic murals by Lonac to No Limit Street Art

May 2, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Lonac is a Croatian artist that earned recognition with his masterful spray paint technique and photo realistic murals. As a schooled painter, he is strongly influenced by classic art, which is noticeable in his work. From creating a reference photograph, prepping the wall, to adding the finest final details, he approaches every piece with absolute dedication and devotion.

Meticulous in execution and very harmonious in their composition, his murals are almost exclusively done with spray paint. Often based on his personal memories or observations, they are influenced by skateboarding culture, comics, graffiti, movies, music, as well as social issues. Along with dominating realist imagery, his works often features surrealist, often recurring elements.

– Lonac really masters spray paint, it´s amazing to see the shadings and the details in his pieces. I admire his photorealistic style which can make it hard to distinguish it from reality, but I can also find his smaller, more humorous pieces, interacting with the surroundings really interesting, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– I love the way he treats a wall. It´s like the wall and the painting create some kind of symbiosis that is very appealing. With Lonac we get representation from yet a new country in our line up and I look forward to see what he can achieve in Borås during No Limit, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Colorful yarn explosions by HOTTEA to No Limit Street Art

April 25, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Artist HOTTEA began his work with typography on fences turning an ordinary everyday object into something designers and artists use everyday – the grid. The foundation behind the work of HOTTEA is to use the existing infrastructure and create an artwork or idea that is in harmony within the given space.

In addition to adapting to the physical qualities of a space or surface- the artist plays close attention to the movement and life in and around the space. For example – do people stop and socialize within a given area or is it common to continue moving? What other physical objects are around the area? Is there a river perhaps or maybe a busy street? All of these factors come into play when HOTTEA designs and activates a space or surface.

– HOTTEA brings both new dimensions and new materials to the festival. The pieces are really a sparkling inferno of colors and I love how he moves between static symmetric installations and the ones that hang down, allowed to be formed by the wind. There´s a lot of joy but at the same time a deep form of tranquility in his pieces that will be enjoyed by many, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– I´m happy that we´re able to include more techniques and diversity to No Limit. The installations of HOTTEA is amazing and what could be more suitable in the textile city of Borås, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.
