Lakwena contributes with colorful messages to No Limit

May 16, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Lakwena Maciver is a London-based artist exhibiting work internationally, both in galleries and in the public environment. Her work is inspired by adornment, and its use and power as a means of communication. Informed by decoration both aesthetically and conceptually, she explores the messages that decoration is used to communicate, its traditional use in worship and myth-making and how this translates into contemporary popular culture.

Concerned with the significance of how and who we decorate, and what this reflects about our values and beliefs, Lakwena positions kaleidoscopic colours, bold pattern and adornment as powerful signifiers to redefine and reassign value and glory. Using words as both images and as anchors of meaning, she borrows from the techniques and conventions of traditional sign-writing and contemporary graphic design.

– I first saw her work when I was painting for Art Basel in Miami in 2013. I watched her do a big mural there and fell in love with her work. After briefly meeting her, and talking to her about her work ethics, she was an obvious choice for us, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– I´m so happy to have Lakwena in our line up. This year we really managed to get a wide range of styles. The work she makes is so colorful and despite it´s really cheerful it also has a deeper meaning in the messages. I love how she combines these important messages with the vibrant colors and massive typography and graphic forms, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Typography becomes art in the hands of Gemma O´Brien

May 9, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Gemma O’Brien is an Australian artist specialising in lettering, illustration and typography. After completing a Bachelor of Design at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney, Gemma worked as an art director at Animal Logic and Fuel VFX before deciding to fly solo as a commercial illustrator in 2012.

Her typographic work takes on a variety of forms, from calligraphic brushwork, illustration and digital type, to large scale hand-painted murals. She splits her time between advertising commissions, gallery shows, speaking engagements, and hosting hand-lettering workshops around the world.

– Typography itself really is an artform. Gemma takes it one step further with her large scale murals that appeals strongly to me as a big typography geek. Her art is a refined hybrid of typography, advertising and traditional sign painting. With my past in the ad agency business I really appreciate the beauty and the craftsmanship in Gemmas work, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– Gemma ads a totally new genre to No Limit and yet another country of origin. As Borås has a long tradition in the ad agency business from the times when the mail order flourished to modern digital e-business, I think Gemmas art suits the city really well. We probably have a lot of typography aficionados and I think her beautiful lettering will be loved by many, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Photorealistic murals by Lonac to No Limit Street Art

May 2, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Lonac is a Croatian artist that earned recognition with his masterful spray paint technique and photo realistic murals. As a schooled painter, he is strongly influenced by classic art, which is noticeable in his work. From creating a reference photograph, prepping the wall, to adding the finest final details, he approaches every piece with absolute dedication and devotion.

Meticulous in execution and very harmonious in their composition, his murals are almost exclusively done with spray paint. Often based on his personal memories or observations, they are influenced by skateboarding culture, comics, graffiti, movies, music, as well as social issues. Along with dominating realist imagery, his works often features surrealist, often recurring elements.

– Lonac really masters spray paint, it´s amazing to see the shadings and the details in his pieces. I admire his photorealistic style which can make it hard to distinguish it from reality, but I can also find his smaller, more humorous pieces, interacting with the surroundings really interesting, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– I love the way he treats a wall. It´s like the wall and the painting create some kind of symbiosis that is very appealing. With Lonac we get representation from yet a new country in our line up and I look forward to see what he can achieve in Borås during No Limit, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Colorful yarn explosions by HOTTEA to No Limit Street Art

April 25, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Artist HOTTEA began his work with typography on fences turning an ordinary everyday object into something designers and artists use everyday – the grid. The foundation behind the work of HOTTEA is to use the existing infrastructure and create an artwork or idea that is in harmony within the given space.

In addition to adapting to the physical qualities of a space or surface- the artist plays close attention to the movement and life in and around the space. For example – do people stop and socialize within a given area or is it common to continue moving? What other physical objects are around the area? Is there a river perhaps or maybe a busy street? All of these factors come into play when HOTTEA designs and activates a space or surface.

– HOTTEA brings both new dimensions and new materials to the festival. The pieces are really a sparkling inferno of colors and I love how he moves between static symmetric installations and the ones that hang down, allowed to be formed by the wind. There´s a lot of joy but at the same time a deep form of tranquility in his pieces that will be enjoyed by many, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– I´m happy that we´re able to include more techniques and diversity to No Limit. The installations of HOTTEA is amazing and what could be more suitable in the textile city of Borås, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

The illusionistic art by Cinta Vidal to No Limit Street Art

April 18, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Cinta Vidal Agulló is a Spanish born artist who have studied at the Escola Massana in Barcelona. At the age of 16 she started working as an apprentice in Taller de Escenografia Castells Planas in St. Agnès de Malanyanes where she learnt from Josep and Jordi Castells to love scenography and the backdrop trade.

Cinta is deeply in to experimenting when it comes to illustration. She has worked as a freelancer for various clients but has gradually been heading to the world of painting and her own work.

– Cintas paintings are really masterpieces in details. It´s like Penrose stairs gone mad and the illusion get´s more obtrusive the more you trying to sort it out. Her art in Borås is going to appeal to people of all ages, that´s for sure, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– Her art is amazing, precise and illusionistic at the same time. The environments and small houses are like a three-dimensional Rubiks cube, you wan´t to grab it from the wall or the canvas to be able to turn and tweak it around. I really look forward to see her piece in Borås, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

TelmoMiel brings bright, happy, figurative art to No Limit Street Art

April 11, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

TelmoMiel is an artist duo from the Netherlands consisting of Telmo Pieper och Miel Krutzmann. Since they first met at the art academy in 2006, they´ve worked seemlessly together developing their love for art with realistic style.

Interpretation is an ongoing study in their process and final results. Their more recent body of work contains playfulness in abstraction of reality, attempting to make the viewer have a different perspective on the subjetcs used.

– TelmoMiel is really a dynamic duo, it may sound like a cliché, but it´s really amazing to see how their different layers interact with one another to form one piece. They are highly talented artists in general and their large scale murals are really mind blowing. Really happy to have them here for No Limit 2017, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– I´m glad to have TelmoMiel for several reasons. First of all because of their beautiful and colorful art of course. I love how they master the shadings and how they are able to switch between realism and surrealism in different parts of their pieces, still keeping it together as a whole. Besides that we´ve technically never had Dutch artists in before (as the London Police, living in Amsterdam, are born in the UK) and a wide cultural background of artists adds a width to the festival, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Traditional lace turns to art through NeSpoon during No Limit Street Art

April 4, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

NeSpoon create works somewhere between street art, pottery, painting, sculptures and jewelry. She would like to make positive art and to deal with positive emotions.

Most of her work consists of prints of traditional laces, made in clay or painted on the walls. She gets the inspiration from hand made laces, made by the folk artists, which containes an aesthetic code, deeply embedded in every culture. Symmetry, some kind of order and harmony is part of every lace and according to NeSpoon that´s what we all seek for, instinctively.

– NeSpoons art challenges my brain, and i really do understand the sense of inner peace she says that the making of this pieces bestows her. The patterns got a depth and three dimensional feeling fooling your brain to believe it´s a gigantic table cloth that you´ll be able to pick off the wall. She´s a multi-faceted artist mastering so many art techniques making me envious of her amplitude, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– At first sight of NeSpoons art I knew instinctively that I wanted her in the line up of No Limit 2017. The veracity and details in her pieces are really amazing. Although it´s almost always made out of black and white, which can be quite hard the artwork feels warm and breathes tranquility, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.

Big trash animals by Bordalo II part of No Limit Street Art

March 28, 2017By No Limit BoråsPressrelease

Artur Bordalo was born in 1987 in Lissabon and the interest of art was inspired by watching his grandfather, the painter Real Bordalo, working with his water colors. Gradually the art developed to a channeling of the artists worries and ecological conscience. Artur says acknowledgement is important but the main role for his art is a sort of activism to call attention to and raise awareness to the fact that humanity, with its disposable habits, is destroying the world.

Bordalo´s works are built with end-of-life materials such as damaged bumpers, burnt garbage cans, tires usually found in wastelands, abandoned factories or obtained from companies going through a recycling process.

– I´m really happy that were able to get Bordalo to Borås and No Limit. He creates really interesting pieces of art and his art sends a very important message about how we treat the world that we all share. Bordalo has attracted great attention to his artwork and I´m looking forward to see what he can create in Borås, says Shai Dahan, curator of No Limit Street Art.

– Bordalo adds a new dimension to street art for me. Working with materials and things that normally got no value, he turns it in to beautiful and very memorable art that can be of great importance for the future. I think the piece of Bardolo in Borås will be admired and enjoyed by both young and old, says Stina Hallhagen, project manager.
